Happy World Gin Day!
Gin —albeit an acquired taste for most imbibers (who probably just weren’t properly initiated ;) — has had a multi-culti storied past since its inception circa the 11th century. This botanical elixir’s story gets especially colorful (literally and figuratively) during America’s Prohibition Era (1920 - 1933), particularly in places like Harlem NY, home to 500+ speakeasies amidst thousands of others throughout the rest of Manhattan and NYC’s outer boroughs. Of all the spirits, gin was the consistent staple in these highly secretive, semi-public ‘watering’ holes — many of which were actually people’s private homes.
Why gin? What were those many contributing factors that fueled gin’s decades plus heydey (which spanned the entire 1920’s and well into the early 1930’s —an informative historic timeline along which this pillar potation’s image morphed from rag tag, down & dirty (and outright dangerous!) to becoming the perfect liquid medium for expressing culinary creativity (on the cocktail front) — and ultimately arriving as a symbol of sophisticated glamour in a sleek, sexy, long-stemmed glass 🍸? …
WELL, for the answers to those questions and then some, stay tuned for an upcoming TFG Prohibition Era Talk (& Taste!) Sipping Series later this year that I’ve got bubbling up and planning to pour out in early December (2024) in accordance with all the key dates associated with Prohibition in American history (i.e. Dec 5th, Dec 18th etc.) . But if you want answers sooner than that, then I suggest you join my Patreon Community at a paid level (see also below) for ongoing direct access and instant-ish answers on a range of culinary and cocktail topics.
Each gin bottle, glass, poster or sign in the carousel of my contemporary photos above has a whole story to go along with it too. As you can see from the volume of bottles, drinks and posters/signs from tasting events that I’ve done, that’s way too many stories to cram into a free blogpost from a freelancer not on direct deposit with any entity 😆 💸… So until capitalism comes up with consistent ways to compensate creatives like me, I apparently have to shamelessly ask those who truly appreciate my work to actively show said appreciation by contributing financially to my Patreon Platform. For a win-win value exchange. Thanks in advance!
Hey it's Rosé Day Too! Like humans, with our diverse range of hues, rosé represents some of the most beautiful expressions of that wonderfully divine elixir called WINE…
