The TFG's Culinary History Convo Series at Lefferts Historic House Continues. Up Next: “Vanilla ICE CREAM, a Portal to our distant and recent Past that Impacts the Present”..
This is the second installation of a new Summer Series of TFG Culinary History Convos I’m hosting at Lefferts Historic House three weekend days in July! …July is known for many things including that it’s aka “Ice Cream Month” and also “Corn Month”. While “Watermelon Month” starts in August, that African-originated hydration food is relevant aaall Summer long (and will be the featured topic on the last Saturday in July FYI)…
This pilot program series is part of Prospect Park Alliance’s “Reimagine Lefferts” Initiative that’s intended to “re-envision the mission and programming of the Lefferts Historic House museum to focus its interpretation and programming on exploring the lives, resistance and resilience of the Indigenous people of Lenapehoking, whose unceded ancestral lands the park and house rests upon, and the African-originated humans held in the bondage of chattel slavery to work that land, prepare food for and live in servitude to the family that enslaved them .” ~ Text adaptation from the ‘Reimagine Lefferts’ mission statement
It’s my motto that food and drink are wonderful talismans through which to ‘time travel’ to make greater sense of our shared past. Accordingly the main topic for each talk is a singular Summer food staple with multitudinous impact the world over: On Sunday July 16th we cover(ed) “Corn” and on this date of July 22nd the topic is “(Vanilla) Ice Cream” — that ubiquitous creamy ice-cold (once ‘exotic’) treat America would likely have never known the way it/we do(es) today had it not been for the ingenuity of enslaved African-heritage people here and abroad.
American history is as essential as it’s always been yet some ‘powers that be’ continue to strive to stifle the truth which keeps people divided. Inclusive narratives like these are intended to unite through better understanding of what happened (us all) , to foster greater ancestral appreciation and gratitude for each and every culture that brought so much to our collective American tables…
